At just 28 years old, the Ghanaian footballer’s untimely death has sent shockwaves through the sports community, leaving fans, fellow players, and officials heartbroken.

A Promising Career Cut Short:

Raphael Dwamena was a talented forward with immense potential. Known for his goal-scoring prowess, he played for several clubs throughout his career, including FC Zurich, Levante, Real Zaragoza, Velje Bodklub, BW Linz, and KF Egnatia. However, his promising career was marred by a severe health issue that ultimately led to his tragic demise.

A History of Cardiac Issues:

The incident that led to Dwamena’s passing was not his first encounter with a cardiac problem. In October 2021, he had collapsed during a game while playing for Blau-Weiss Linz. This alarming episode raised concerns about his health, leading to an evaluation of his condition. It was discovered that Dwamena had a heart problem, for which he had been playing with an Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (ICD), a device designed to monitor and treat irregular heart rhythms.

In November 2021, CAF Medical Officer, Dr. Prince Pamboe, advised the Ghanaian striker to consider retiring from active football due to his cardiac issues. Despite the medical advice, Dwamena’s love for the game and his determination to continue playing led him to take the field once again.

The Tragic Incident in Albania:

The tragic incident occurred during a league match between Dwamena’s team, KF Egnatia, and Partizan. In the 23rd minute of the game, he suddenly lost consciousness and was immediately rushed to the hospital. Specialist doctors worked tirelessly to revive him, but, sadly, their efforts were in vain as Raphael Dwamena passed away.

A Football Community in Mourning:

News of Dwamena’s passing sent shockwaves throughout the football world. His former clubs, including FC Zurich, Levante, Real Zaragoza, Velje Bodklub, BW Linz, and KF Egnatia, all released statements expressing their condolences and sharing their memories of the talented forward. The Ghana Football Association also mourned his loss, highlighting his contributions to the Black Stars and his presence in the world of Ghanaian football.
