What did Lewis Black do before comedy?

Before pursuing a career in comedy, Lewis Black worked at the Appalachian Regional Commission and wrote plays. He also studied playwriting and was a brother of Pi Lambda Phi International fraternity and a member of Student Congress.

Additionally, Lewis Black dedicated his life full-time to art, mostly stained glass and painting. His father introduced him to theater and playwriting, two things that defined Lewis Black’s artistic endeavors long before stand-up comedy.

Lewis Black grew up in a middle-class Jewish family in the Burnt Mills neighborhood of Silver Spring, Maryland. He wrote the musical “The Czar of Rock and Roll” in 1990.

Lewis Black hosted the Comedy Central series “Lewis Black’s Root of All Evil”. Lewis Black is also a spokesperson for the Aruba Tourism Authority, appearing in television ads. Lewis Black has been an “ambassador for voting rights” for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) since 2013.
