Lewis Black is the elder son of Jeannette Black (née Kaplan; 1918-2022), a teacher, and Samuel Black (1918–2019), an artist and mechanical engineer. He had a younger brother, Ronald, who passed away due to cancer in 1997 at the age of 47.

Lewis Black was born on August 30, 1948, in Washington, D.C., United States of America. Lewis Black grew up in a middle-class Jewish family in the Burnt Mills neighborhood of Silver Spring, Maryland.

Lewis Black attended the University of Maryland, College Park, where he studied playwriting. He later transferred to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he graduated in 1970.
In 2015, Lewis Black lent his voice to the character Anger in the Pixar film “Inside Out” and will reprise the role in the sequel, “Inside Out 2”. Lewis Black is also a spokesperson for the Aruba Tourism Authority, appearing in television ads.
