Marcus Besen, the co-founder of Sussan and a Holocaust survivor born in Romania, embraced Australia’s vibrant business scene with an entrepreneurial spirit.
Initially a hosiery supplier, Besen, alongside John Gandel, transformed Sussan into one of Australia’s largest fashion retailers by the 1960s, boasting 168 Sussan and 152 Suzanne Grae stores by 1990.

Beyond fashion, Besen’s influence reached into real estate, with Sussan acquiring stakes in notable shopping centers.
In 2006, the Besen family strategically sold a 50% stake in Highpoint Shopping Centres for $621 million, later divesting the remaining 25% in 2017 for $680 million.
Besen’s passion for the arts flourished at TarraWarra, a 300-hectare winery and cattle stud in the Yarra Valley, where the TarraWarra Museum of Art was born.
Besen’s passed away on November 8, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of business acumen, philanthropy, and a deep appreciation for the arts at the age of 99.
