Bass Reeves Parents: Meet Arthur Reeves and Parilee Washington

Bass Reeves, the legendary lawman of the American frontier, is celebrated for his fearless pursuit of justice and his role in taming the Wild West.

While his law enforcement career has been well-documented, the story of his upbringing and family roots is a captivating tale that adds depth to his enigmatic persona.

Bass Reeves was born in 1838 in the state of Arkansas. His parents were Arthur Reeves and Parilee Washington. He had three siblings, including a sister named Jane Brady.

The circumstances of his early life were marked by the harsh realities of slavery, as he and his family were owned by Arkansas state legislator William Steele Reeves.

When Bass was just eight years old, around 1846, William Reeves decided to relocate to Grayson County, Texas, near Sherman, as part of the Peters Colony. It is here that the intricate story of Bass Reeves’ early years begins to unfold.

It appears plausible that Reeves was held in bondage by William Steele Reeves’s son, Colonel George R. Reeves, a prominent Texan sheriff, legislator, and one-time Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives.

The outbreak of the American Civil War brought significant changes to the lives of many, including Bass Reeves. George Reeves, having joined the Confederate Army, compelled Bass to accompany him.

The precise circumstances of Bass Reeves’ escape are somewhat unclear, but at some point during the Civil War, he managed to gain his freedom.  In the Indian Territory, Bass Reeves found refuge among various Native American tribes, including the Cherokee, Creek, and Seminole.

During his time among these communities, he is said to have learned their languages and adapted to their way of life. It was in this diverse and complex environment that Bass Reeves may have spent a portion of his life until the Thirteenth Amendment’s abolition of slavery in 1865 granted him his long-awaited freedom.
