Colson’s coaching journey took him to various institutions, including Fresno State, New Mexico, and Pepperdine. However, it was his influence beyond the courts that will forever be etched in the annals of college basketball history.

Gary Colson’s love for basketball was evident from a young age. He embarked on his coaching career at the tender age of 24, spending ten seasons at Division II Valdosta State in Georgia.

In his later years, Colson continued to share his expertise as a basketball instructor at the University of California, Santa Barbara. His commitment to the game never waned, and he remained a respected figure both on and off the court.

Gary Colson’s educational background was equally impressive. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education from David Lipscomb College (now Lipscomb University) in 1956. His exceptional achievements in the world of sports led to his induction into the Lipscomb Athletics Hall of Fame in 1998, under the “Athlete” category.

Beyond his coaching accomplishments, Colson was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his wife, Mary Katherine, their children Rick, Wade, and Garianne, as well as four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
