On October 28, 2023, the hockey world bid farewell to one of its most iconic figures, as Joe Thornton officially announced his retirement from the NHL, marking the end of a remarkable 24-year career.

The 44-year-old veteran, known for his playmaking abilities and charismatic presence, had not played professionally since the 2021-22 season with the Florida Panthers.

His decision to retire was made official through a heartfelt video released via the San Jose Sharks.

In the video, Thornton addressed his decision to hang up his skates, saying, “Judging how many people keep asking me, I guess I have to tell you, I’m officially retiring from the NHL.”

“I thought you guys would figure it out sooner, but you kept asking so here I am retiring. I have so much love for the game of hockey and for the countless number of people that helped this kid’s dream become a reality. If you’re looking for me, you know where to find me. I’ll be at the rink.”

Thornton’s journey in the NHL was nothing short of extraordinary. He burst onto the scene in 1997 when he was selected as the No. 1 overall pick by the Boston Bruins.

Over the years, he displayed his immense talent and hockey IQ, becoming one of the league’s premier playmakers. His greatest success came during his 15 seasons with the San Jose Sharks, where he established himself as a franchise legend and a beloved figure among fans.

Throughout his illustrious career, Thornton recorded a staggering 1,714 regular-season games, leaving an indelible mark on the NHL record books. He tallied 1,109 assists and 430 goals, showcasing his versatility as a forward.

His impressive accomplishments also included four All-Star selections, an Olympic gold medal for Team Canada in 2010, and an outstanding 2005-06 season where he captured the Hart Trophy as the league’s Most Valuable Player and the Art Ross Trophy as the scoring leader.

In the NHL’s all-time rankings, Joe Thornton holds a remarkable legacy. He stands as the seventh-highest assist producer in the league’s history, ranking twelfth in total points with an impressive 1,539, and sixth in games played, illustrating his incredible longevity and commitment to the sport.
