After completing his high school education, Johnson took the next step in his hockey journey by joining the ranks of junior hockey in the United States Hockey League (USHL).
His dedication and hard work on the ice did not go unnoticed, and he soon found himself at the University of Minnesota Duluth, where he would spend two seasons playing collegiate hockey in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC).
Despite not being drafted, Johnson’s determination and talent were undeniable. He was invited to the Pittsburgh Penguins’ prospect development camp, where he showcased his skills and potential. On July 6, 2017, he agreed to a two-year, entry-level contract with the Penguins, marking a pivotal moment in his professional hockey career.
