Courtney Johnston, the wife of Mike Johnston, the 46th and current Mayor of Denver, Colorado, is one such remarkable individual whose dedication and commitment to the public interest are nothing short of inspiring.

Courtney Johnston and Mike Johnston embarked on a journey together when they were married in 2004. Today, they reside in Central Park, Denver, along with their three children: Seamus, Emmet, and Ava.

But Courtney’s contribution to society extends far beyond the role of a supportive spouse. A dedicated deputy district attorney, Courtney leads the juvenile unit of the Denver District Attorney’s Office.

Courtney’s passion for public service began at a young age. She majored in political science at Agnes Scott, and her desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others led her to Teach for America.

It was during her training in Houston in 1997 that she crossed paths with Mike, a fellow educator hailing from Vail, Colorado. Both were assigned to the Mississippi Delta, and their shared commitment to teaching brought them together.

Their academic pursuits eventually led them to Harvard University for graduate studies. Courtney’s focus was on human development and psychology, with a specialization in childhood trauma—a subject with profound implications for the welfare of young minds.

Simultaneously, Mike embarked on a program for aspiring school administrators, reinforcing the couple’s shared dedication to the field of education. After their time at Harvard, Courtney took a brief respite from the northeastern climate, returning to Atlanta.

There, she served as a caseworker for the Department of Family and Children’s Services (DFACS), where she worked closely with teenagers who were transitioning out of foster care, requiring long-term solutions and support.

A pivotal moment in Courtney’s professional journey came when she joined Third Way Center, a non-profit organization founded on principles of community-based, justice-focused, and trauma-informed mental health care.

When Mike rejoined her in Colorado two years later, he became the principal at the school serving the Third Way Center.
