Ian Shugart, a former clerk of the Privy Council and a career public servant, has died at the age of 66. Shugart’s passing was announced by Senate Speaker Raymonde Gagné on Wednesday. He was appointed to the Senate in September 2022 but had been battling cancer since 2021.

“It is with tremendous sadness that we learned this morning of the passing of Ian Shugart, a senator, a public servant extraordinaire, who was a man of deep, deep integrity and grace and brilliance,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters on Parliament Hill.

Shugart was a policy adviser to Progressive Conservative leaders Joe Clark and Brian Mulroney from 1980 to 1984 when Clark and Mulroney were leaders of the Official Opposition.
