Anita Summers was an eminent figure in the fields of public policy, management, real estate, and education.
She was a Professor Emerita at the University of Pennsylvania.
Summers embarked on her academic journey in 1967 when she began teaching economics at Swarthmore College.

One of the pivotal milestones in her career came when she assumed leadership of the urban economic department at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia from 1971 to 1979.

Her insights into urban economics, during her tenure at the Federal Reserve, offered profound understandings of the complex dynamics of urban environments.
In 1979, Summers joined the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where she initiated a groundbreaking change in the world of education by establishing the first public policy department in a business school.
Shele chaired the public policy department at Wharton from 1983 to 1988.
Summers was also an active member of the Provost’s Academic Planning and Budget Committee from 1984 to 1990.
In addition to her educational pursuits, Summers was a senior research fellow at Wharton’s Samuel Zell and Robert Lurie Real Estate Center. She authored and edited numerous books and reports that illuminated the intricate dynamics of this industry.
On October 22, 2023, Summers peacefully passed away at the age of 98.
