J. Frederick Motz was a dedicated United States district judge for the District of Maryland.

His journey in law began in 1969 when he served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the District of Maryland, where he honed his legal skills.

In 1971, Motz ventured into private practice in Baltimore, further solidifying his expertise in the field.

His career reached a pivotal moment in 1981 when he assumed the role of the United States Attorney for the District of Maryland, becoming a key figure in upholding the law.

The year 1985 marked a turning point when President Ronald Reagan nominated him for a seat on the United States District Court for the District of Maryland. Following Senate approval on July 11, 1985, he began his tenure as a federal judge.

Distinguished for his service, Motz served as Chief Judge from 1994 to 2001.
