J. Frederick Motz was a United States district judge for the District of Maryland.

Motz’s legal journey began in 1969 when he took on the role of an Assistant United States Attorney in the District of Maryland.

In 1971, J. Frederick Motz ventured into private practice in Baltimore, further enhancing his expertise and establishing a solid foundation in the field of law.

A pivotal moment in Motz’s career arrived in 1981 when he assumed the role of the United States Attorney for the District of Maryland.

The year 1985 marked a significant milestone in J. Frederick Motz’s career. On April 23, he received a nomination by President Ronald Reagan to a new seat on the United States District Court for the District of Maryland.

He underwent a confirmation process, receiving approval from the United States Senate on July 11, 1985.

During his time on the bench, Motz distinguished himself further by serving as the Chief Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Maryland from 1994 to 2001.

Tragically, on October 23, 2023, Motz passed away at the age of 80.
