Victoria Pendleton was born on September 24, 1980, in Stotfold, England, as part of a close-knit family. Her father, Max Pendleton, was not just an ordinary parent but a keen cyclist himself.

In his earlier days, Max Pendleton was a notable figure in British cycling, having achieved the title of British National 8 km grass track cycling champion.

Recalling her early years, Victoria Pendleton spoke about her family in an interview, reminiscing about her childhood. She described how her father, Max, was a dedicated amateur cyclist.

Each weekend, from May to September, the family’s routine involved eagerly watching him compete in cycling races.

The Pendleton family resided in Stotfold, Bedfordshire, where Victoria grew up. Their home was a modest three-bedroom detached house.

Victoria shared a bedroom with her older sister, Nicola Jane, who was six years her senior, while her twin brother, Alex, had the smallest room.

Victoria Pendleton’s journey into the world of competitive cycling was heavily influenced by her father, Max. He undertook her training until the age of 16 when she was scouted by the national team.

Her relationship with her father was complex during those formative years. Victoria expressed that she once believed that achieving success in sports would earn her his love, but the constant pressure to meet his expectations weighed heavily on her.

Max pushed her rigorously, and she struggled to feel that she could ever truly meet his standards. In stark contrast, her mother, Pauline, provided comfort and reassurance, offering words of wisdom such as “You can only do your best.” These two parental dynamics embodied the yin and yang of her upbringing.

In her autobiography, Victoria Pendleton shared her feelings about the immense pressure her father’s expectations had placed upon her. However, her father’s response to her candid revelations was an apology.

The Pendleton family’s journey took a somber turn in June 2023 when Victoria shared the heartbreaking news of her twin brother, Alex’s passing. He had succumbed to a brain tumor, leaving a profound void in the family.
