A group of mob figures, including 86-year-old Vincent Asaro, are accused of stealing close to $6 million during the 1978 airport robbery. After winning the case in 2015, he was sentenced to prison for an unrelated case of road rage arson.

2020 saw the ill capo’s compassionate release due to concerns that he would be susceptible to the COVID-19 virus after suffering a stroke while imprisoned. Due to Valenti’s cooperation with the authorities, he was spared up to 20 years in prison and was given probation instead.

It was unknown what exactly caused Asaro to pass away. Asaro’s funeral will take place on Friday at St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Queens, according to his family.
The former gangster was born in 1937 in Ozone Park. He entered the world of organized crime after his father and uncle, rising through the ranks of the Bonanno family to become a captain by the middle of the 1970s.
