Following the demise of the Ceylinco Consolidated-affiliated Golden Key Creditcard Company, Kotalawala, the chairman of the business, was charged with theft and financial mismanagement.

The Mount Lavinia Magistrate remanded him on February 26, 2009, and gave him a 10-day deadline to repay the Rs. 26 billion in deposits made by Golden Key Creditcard Company users. The CEO Khavan Perera, the CFO, and a number of other directors had been remanded by the same magistrate weeks earlier.
