Former “Little House on the Prairie” actress, Melissa Gilbert, didn’t hold back her thoughts on SAG-AFTRA’s recent Halloween costume guidelines. Drawing a parallel, she insinuated that the union’s directives seemed as out of place as finding manure in a prairie home.

Gilbert, who once led the actors’ union as president between 2001 and 2005, lambasted the guild’s recent directives on Thursday, terming their stance on Halloween costumes as “infantile”, especially amidst an ongoing actors’ strike.

Taking on Instagram, the 59-year-old actress shared her disbelief with her followers. “THIS is your focus right now?” she voiced, referencing a Hollywood Reporter article about the guild’s Halloween guidelines. She continued with palpable frustration, “Nobody is concerned about Halloween outfits. Is this juvenile approach really the solution to end the strike?”

Expressing her exasperation, Gilbert pleaded with the union’s leadership to reconsider their priorities. “This makes us look unserious. I hope you’ll reconsider this guideline and focus on negotiations. People are genuinely struggling, and this is the statement you choose to make? Please, refocus.”

The backdrop to Gilbert’s passionate plea is SAG-AFTRA’s recent post offering “Halloween guidance” for its members. The guild’s recommendations highlight certain “dos and don’ts” for the festive season. They suggest actors opt for generic characters like ghosts or zombies, steering clear from specific characters from notable franchises such as Marvel, Star Wars, or films like the Barbie movie and Oppenheimer.
