Bill Hayden, a former governor general and head of the Labor Party, passed away at the age of 90.
Hayden, who was born in 1933 in Brisbane’s inner-north, dropped out of school at 16 and held a variety of occupations, including one as a police officer, before being elected to the federal legislature in 1961 at the age of 28 after Labor won the Queensland seat of Oxley.

When Malcolm Fraser of the Liberal Party was in office as prime minister from 1977 to 1983, Hayden ascended through the ranks to become the Labor party’s leader. When the party made it obvious that Bob Hawke—who would soon be elected prime minister—was the preferred candidate, he resigned as Labor leader in the early months of 1983.
