Twilley, who was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, started a musical career that would make him well-known in the energy pop subgenre. In the latter half of the 1960s, he and Phil Seymour established the group Oister, and they hired Bill Pitcock IV as the lead guitarist on a contract basis. Twilley and Seymour were friends with Tom Petty at that time, and Petty returned the favor on the band’s second album, “Twilley Don’t Mind” in 1977. Twilley and Seymour contributed backing vocals to many songs.When recording his debut album, Petty requested that Twilley and her companion Phil Seymour, who is also from Tulsa, provide background vocals on the song “Strangered in the Night.” Seymour also sang background vocals on the songs “Breakdown” and “American Girl.” On the Dwight Twilley Band’s song “Looking For the Magic,” Petty provided the guitar.
