Known as a courageous warrior for justice, Peter R. de Vries, a Dutch journalist who was shot in a blatant assassination attempt on Wednesday, was acclaimed as a “national hero” for his coverage of the kidnapping of beer millionaire Freddy Heineken in the 1980s.

The 64-year-old was shot dead in broad daylight on Tuesday in a popular Amsterdam street as he was leaving a television studio and was in critical condition in a Dutch hospital.

He published “The Kidnapping of Alfred Heineken” in 1987, which tells the story from Van Hout’s perspective. The book became a best-seller and one of the most prominent on shelves in Dutch households after being based on interviews with Van Hout and Holleeder.
