His contributions to the field of unsolved cases earned him decades of fame in the Netherlands. His documentary on the disappearance of Natalee Holloway also helped him gain international recognition. He established his own political party in 2005, which was quickly abolished.

De Vries, who had been a guest on RTL Boulevard’s television show in Amsterdam on July 6, 2021, was shot in the head after exiting the building. Nine days after being admitted to the hospital in severe condition, he passed away.
