Burt Young, an Oscar-nominated actor who portrayed Sylvester Stallone’s roughhewn, mumbling, and grumbling closest pal Paulie in the “Rocky” movies, has passed away.

Young, who was born and reared in Queens, New York, served in the Marine Corps, competed as a professional boxer, and worked as a carpet layer before deciding to pursue acting at the Actors Studio, where he studied with renowned mentor Lee Strasberg. He frequently portrayed struggling working class folks on theater, in movies, and on television.

In a brief but famous scene from the 1974 film “Chinatown,” he portrays a fisherman who loses his cool when Jack Nicholson’s private eye Jake Gittes shows him images demonstrating his wife’s infidelity. He devoted more of his later years to painting and theater roles.
