The acclaimed jazz pianist-composer from the United States, Carla Bley, has passed away at the age of 87. She was known for both her daringly avant-garde work and her inspiring and lovely reinterpretations of the genre’s mainstream.
The reason of her passing was listed as complications from brain cancer, according to her longtime partner and musical partner Steve Swallow.

She was a crucial member of the Jazz Composer’s Orchestra and its affiliated Guild, a labor organization that fought for better working conditions for musicians. Bley was the group’s arranger and conductor, and Rolling Stone magazine’s Lester Bangs praised her “miracles of dynamics” in a review of their self-titled 1970 album. The Liberation Music Orchestra, led by bassist Charlie Haden, was also politically engaged. Haden was inspired by Spanish civil war songs, Che Guevara, and more.
