Carla Bley was an American jazz composer, pianist, organist, and bandleader who lived from May 11, 1936, to October 17, 203. Her jazz opera Escalator over the Hill, which was released as a triple LP set, and a book of compositions that have been performed by numerous artists, including Gary Burton, Jimmy Giuffre, George Russell, Art Farmer, John Scofield, and her ex-husband Paul Bley, are among the works that make her a significant figure in the free jazz movement of the 1960s.

Paul Bley’s Barrage was made up solely of Bley’s songs, while George Russell recorded “Bent Eagle” for his album Stratusphunk in 1960. Jimmy Giuffre also included “Ictus” on his album Thesis.
