Australian retired diver and trampolinist Matthew Mitcham was born on March 2, 1988. He was the 10m platform Olympic diving champion in 2008, and he currently holds the record for the second-highest single-dive score in Olympic history (at the time, it was the highest scoring dive ever).

He became the first openly gay Olympian after accomplishing this feat. Since Dick Eve won the diving gold medal in the Summer Olympics in 1924, he is also the first Australian man to do so.

Mitcham started out as a trampoline gymnast. At the Chandler Aquatic Centre in Brisbane’s suburbs, Wang Tong Xiang, a coach with the Australian Institute of Sport Diving Program, noticed Mitcham. For several years, Mitcham continued to dive and trampoline.
