The Southwest has been Terry Allen’s source of inspiration for over 50 years as both an artist and musician. Allen, who is 78 years old, has created a body of work that includes albums, installations, radio plays, and drawings. In it, he alludes to the long stretches of deserted highways, run-down hotels, and neon-lit bars in the area, as well as the bank robbers, ex-football stars, and small-town loner residents that live there. There always seems to be a simmering tension between possibility for romance or violence.

Growing up, Allen worked as a soda salesman at the dance hall his father, a former baseball player turned event producer, ran in Lubbock. It was there that he first heard Hank Williams and Little Richard. He made friends with Ed Ruscha and socialized with surrealists in the 1960s while attending art school in Los Angeles.

American native Terry Allen was born in Wichita, Kansas. Pauline Pierce Allen, his mother, a skilled pianist, taught Allen how to play the piano at the start of his musical career. He created his first song, “Red Bird,” in 1962, while still a senior in high school. He would later sing it live on Shindig! in 1965 and record it for his 1980 album Smokin’ the Dummy.
