The baseball world was rocked by the sudden departure of Kim Ng, the former general manager of the Miami Marlins, who decided not to exercise her option for the 2024 season.

Ng’s exit from the Marlins, coming just after leading the team to the playoffs for the first time in nearly two decades, left many fans and experts wondering about the circumstances behind her decision.
While the Marlins’ 2023 season was a significant success story, culminating in a return to the playoffs for the first time in a full-season year since 2003, it appears that there were underlying issues that prompted Ng’s exit.
One of the major points of contention revolved around the Marlins’ approach to Ng’s contract. While the organization did pick up her mutual option for the 2024 season, they notably did not offer her a new three-year deal, a common practice in the industry when an executive reaches the end of their contract or has achieved substantial success.

Another critical issue was the Marlins’ intent to hire a president of baseball operations over Kim Ng. This move would effectively have demoted her, curbing her ability to reshape the baseball operations department as she saw fit.
In a statement to The Athletic, she shared, “Last week, Bruce and I discussed his plan to reshape the baseball operations department. In our discussions, it became apparent that we were not completely aligned on what that should look like, and I felt it best to step away.”
Despite her departure, Ng expressed her gratitude and appreciation for the Marlins and their fans. She acknowledged that the past year represented a significant stride forward for the organization and commended the dedicated staff and management for their hard work.
