Ryan, a Dublin native, started his professional career on February 9, 1975, with Bohemians. After 14 goals in 53 games, he won a transfer to Derby County in 1977.

He eventually transferred to Brighton for £100,000 and played there in the 1983 FA Cup Final against Manchester United. His career was cut short in 1985 when he shattered his leg in a tackle from Henry Hughton of Crystal Palace. Between 1978 and 1984, he played for Ireland 18 times.
