At the age of 68, former Brighton & Hove Albion striker Gerry Ryan passed away. Ryan joined the team in 1978 from Derby County and made 199 appearances for the team, scoring 39 goals.

Ryan also made 19 appearances for the Republic of Ireland national team, sharing the field with Liam Brady, a midfielder who had played for West Ham United, Juventus, Arsenal, and Inter Milan. Brady called Ryan a “influential figure.”

After quitting the professional game, Ryan and his wife Simeon purchased and managed The Witch Inn in Lindfield, West Sussex. In the Lewes Sunday League, he frequently played for The Witch. On August 18, 2007, Ryan underwent a stroke and was subsequently brought to the hospital.
