In an interview with Sports Illustrated, Penix stated that he entered the transfer portal because he wanted to continue his collegiate career following his myriad of injuries.

Penix was attracted to the Pacific Northwest because he had worked with Kalen DeBoer, the current head coach of the Washington Huskies, during his time at Indiana. DeBoer was Penix’s offensive coordinator in 2019, and the two had a successful season together.
