Her manager, Marion Rosenberg, released a heartfelt statement confirming her passing and eulogizing her as “an actress of unparalleled versatility and creativity” and a “true gem of a human.” Laurie breathed her last in Los Angeles on Saturday, following an extended period of deteriorating health.

Piper, born Rosetta Jacobs on January 22, 1932, was the younger of two siblings. Her roots trace back to a modest household, with her mother, Charlotte, managing the household and her father, Alfred, involved in the furniture business.

A defining chapter in her childhood was the three years she spent in a children’s asylum in Los Angeles. She was accompanied by her sister, who was there for health concerns. Reflecting upon those years, Laurie expressed how the experience rendered her introspective, noting that it “endowed her with the gift of imagination.” The challenging times kindled her desire “to create, inspire, and make a positive mark in the world.”
Post her notable stint in “Hustler,” Laurie took an acting hiatus, spanning 15 years, relocating to Woodstock, New York. There, she immersed herself in motherhood, raising her daughter, Anne, alongside her spouse, entertainment journalist Joe Morgenstern. The couple shared their life from 1962 to 1982. During this time, Piper also explored her passion for sculpture and made her presence felt on Broadway with “The Glass Menagerie.”
Tributes and warm remembrances poured in on social media. A fan tweeted, “A farewell to Piper Laurie, a brilliant actress with the versatility to play both the tormented lover in ‘The Hustler’ and the daunting mother in ‘Carrie.’” Another reminisced, “We bid goodbye to a stalwart from Hollywood’s Golden Age, an exceptional soul. Rest in peace.” Yet another admirer celebrated her legacy: “R.I.P. Piper Laurie, a true queen. Her genius shone through in unforgettable performances like ‘Twin Peaks,’ ‘Carrie,’ and ‘The Hustler’.”
