Reeves first discovered constellations by utilizing a cardboard sheet while outside with his family at their home in Quebec, where they would go at night to view the sky. He was a pro at physics and, by the time he was 18, had decided that he wanted to be an astronomer.

Prior to beginning his teaching career at the University of Belgium, he earned his doctorate from Cornell University and worked as a scientific adviser to NASA in the early 1960s. He then turned into a fervent advocate for the environment and started pressuring legislators to act.
