The head coach of the Rhein Fire in the European League of Football (ELF), James Tomsula is an American football coach who was born on April 14, 1967. Tomsula has worked as a defensive coach his whole career and has also served as the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers of the National Football League (NFL) and the Rhein Fire of NFL Europe.

In the Pittsburgh suburb of Homestead, Tomsula was born and nurtured. He transferred from Middle Tennessee State University after the 1986 campaign, and from 1987 to 1990, he was a defensive end at Catawba College. Tomsula made 109 tackles over the course of two seasons at Catawba College.

Tomsula was hired by the Dallas Cowboys on January 8, 2020, to coach their defensive line. Mike Nolan, the defensive coordinator, and Tomsula were fired on January 8, 2021.
