He was a 2016 unanimous All-American and a Butkus Award winner. The San Francisco 49ers made him their first-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. On January 18, 2017, it was revealed that Foster and Jonathan Allen, another teammate from Alabama, had turned down invitations to participate in the 2017 Senior Bowl.

On February 13, 2017, it was made public that Foster had surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff in his right shoulder. 19 collegiate linebackers, including Foster, participated at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana.
