In 2017, Richards achieved career-high numbers, scoring an impressive 25 points and snatching 15 rebounds in a game against IPFW, leading the Wildcats’ to a 86–67 victory.
During the 2020 NBA draft, he was selected as the 42nd overall pick by the New Orleans Pelicans. However, shortly after the draft, Richards was traded to the Charlotte Hornets in exchange for a 2024 second-round pick.
Richards’ commitment and hard work were evident when he was assigned to the Greensboro Swarm, the Charlotte Hornets’ G League affiliate. His NBA G League debut on February 21, 2021, saw him score an impressive 26 points and securing 10 rebounds.
